Does anyone have knowledge of adapted Leica M lens performance on Panasonic S1/S1R cameras?

Hey fellow L mount enthusiasts,

Has anyone heard from Panasonic or a S1/S1R or a beta tester if Leica M lenses perform well like on a Leica SL OR if not how they fare?

I am really excited for Panasonic's S1 and S1R cameras.

I am hoping Leica M glass performs really well like on the Leica SL and not like how M glass image quality is clearly degraded on Sony A7 series cameras.

I plan on getting one no matter what for the awesome video specs and full frame. These cameras look really promising considering the GH5 and their higher end pro video cameras.

If Leica M glass works well on them that would a big bonus.

Thank you very much,

-Peter

I'm wondering the same thing. I currently own an SL and it works pretty well with my M glass...not quite as good as my M240 did but close enough, and certainly better then a Sony. I have a sneaky suspicion that the Panasonic S1R will NOT work as well as the Leica SL. I have this theory that this will be one of the ways Leica can differentiate the SL/SL2 from Panasonic S1R cameras is the ability to play nicely with M glass.

Of course I am purely speculating but it makes sense if you think about it. Why would you even bother to buy an SL if you can buy a (likely higher spec'd) S1R for less money and mount the exact same L mount and M lenses??? Why would Leica agree to that? Maybe they decided to license the L mount with an agreement that Panasonic use a thicker sensor filter that would mess with M glass:)

I hope I'm wrong...I hope the S1R works just as well with M lenses as my SL, that really would be awesome.

I find it unlikely that Panasonic will put lots of effort into developing/testing/streamlining micro-lenses on the sensor - and/or other sensor fixes - to mediate the effect of the oblique incoming rays from most (wide) Leica M/older lenses. Leica, I believe, will continue to ensure that M-lenses work fine on the SL. I also suspect that Panasonic is less strict with possible image quality issues resulting from 'new' technology (ibis and LENR, for instance). And surely, from a purely tech spec point of view, Panasonic will likely offer a product ahead of Leica. But Leica will have their users nevertheless based on optics, simplicity of operation, colour rendering, brand loyality, etc. etc. Personally, I am very positive to the L-alliance, implying a wider, more diverse and (partly) less costly product portfolio.
